Almost Alive is a pure studio album, although the closing track "Live in Jericho" might be recorded 'live in the studio'. It is exactly the same band who played on the previous album Pyragony X (that's unique; the only AD2 line-up that lasted for more than one studio album!): Chris Karrer (guitars, sax, vocals), Peter Leopold (drums), John Weinzierl (guitars), Klaus Ebert (bass, vocals) and Stefan Zauner (keyboards, vocals). But musically this album is different. At this time they had more or less abandoned their Krautrock past and evolved toward keyboard-heavy jazz-fusion. I didn't like this album that much when it was new, but it has grown on me, and it doesn't sound dated as much as Pyragony X does.
